A day in the life

Ever wondered what a day was like as an electrical apprentice?  Check it out!

An apprenticeship combines on-the-job and classroom training.  This allows you, as the apprentice to actually earn while you learn.  As an apprentice, you will work year-round for electrical contractors, and attend classroom sessions during academic year.  As you learn by doing, you are paid directly by contractor with which you are employed.  While progressing through the training, you receive guaranteed promotion and pay raises.

The recruitment, selection, employment and training of apprentices during their apprenticeship, shall be without discrimination because of race, color, religion, national origin, or sex. The applicant must meet the minimum age requirement. The JATC does not, and will not, discriminate against a qualified individual with a disability because of the disability of such individual. The sponsor will take affirmative action to provide equal opportunity in apprenticeship and will operate the apprenticeship program as required under applicable law and lawful regulations issued thereunder.

The aptitude test is administered by the New Mexico JATC office.  You will receive an email and mailed letter informing you of the date and time of your scheduled test.  There are 33 questions on Algebra and Functions, with 46 minutes in this section.  There are 36 questions on Reading Comprehension, with 51 minutes in this section.  You will take a short break between the Algebra and Functions Test and the Reading Comprehension Test.

The test will be graded with a score from 1 through 9, with 9 being the highest.  You must achieve a score of at least 4 to qualify for an interview.   It takes approximately 2-4 weeks to get the results of the aptitude test.  If after taking the test and achieving a score of at least 4, you will then be scheduled for an interview at the next session.  If not, you must wait 6 months to retake the test.

Interview

If you obtain a qualifying score on the test battery, you will be scheduled for an oral interview.  You will be interviewed by a committee representing both NECA and the IBEW.  Based on the interview (including a review of your qualifications), you will receive an overall ranking.  As new positions become available in the apprenticeship program, names will be taken off the respective eligibility list for One (1) year.  If you are not selected to begin an apprenticeship during that one-year period, you will need to reapply if you are still interested.
